Earnings-related allowance

Working abroad

Work performed abroad is taken into account in Finnish unemployment security on the basis of EU regulations and Nordic agreements.
Employment in another EU country can help you qualify for earnings-related allowance in Finland. You can also go to another EU country to look for work.

When moving to Finland, you should join an unemployment fund as soon as you start working. This way, your employment helps you qualify for earnings-related unemployment security. Joining a fund promptly also affects whether your employment in another EU country can be taken into account when you apply for unemployment security in Finland

Generally, you can join an unemployment fund only when you are employed or set up as self-employed. However, if you move to Finland from another EU country, you have a specific window for joining an unemployment fund even when unemployed. The window for joining is generally one month from your move or from the end of your employment relationship.

Contact your unemployment fund for more information on working abroad and heading abroad to find work.
